Rothenburg's best photo spots

A selection by tour guide and photo journalist James Derheim (European Private Focus Tours)

Rothenburg ob der Tauber – an ancient town in the north of Bavaria that has no lack of picturesque spots and gothic architecture. This used to be a paradise for romantic painters and now is a true treasure chest for photographers.

One of those afficionados of cameras who are lucky enought to live here is US-American tour guide James Derheim. He is based in Rothenburg ob der Tauber since over 20 years and knows every possible corner in town.

He managed to give us an overview of the best photo spots in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. You can find our list of the Top10-Sights and Top10-Activities on our website as well. But first enjoy the Top10 photo spots in Rothenburg by James Derheim.

Photospot Number 1: Mills in Tauber Valley near Rothenburg

The Tauber Valley near Rothenburg is a wonderland of history, bucolic scenes and stopping points. This is ancient mill just north of the hamlet of Detwang.

Photospot Number 2: View along Obere Schmiedgasse

The view down the Obere Schmiedgasse all the way to Plönlein. Mix in the pink hues of the setting sun and it’s a show stopper.

Photospot Number 3: St. Wolfgang

The footbridge leading to the old shepherd’s church of St. Wolfgang, another of those cases where one can easily imagine another time.

Photospot Number 4: Castle Gate

Walking through the Castle Gate into the Castle Garden I always feel as if I am breaking out of town. The reward is to enter one of Rothenburg’s natural treasures, a place of peace and nature and reflection.

Photospot Number 5: Spital Bastion

Sometimes a place still echoes with the sound of history. When I stand inside the massive bulwark at the Spital Gate I can hear the cannon fire, the scrambling of feet on the dirt floor, the clatter of small arms, the shouts of the defenders.

Photospot Number 6: Entrance to the old town hall

Sometimes I have to bleed the color out of an image so as to complete the time travel aspect of a walk around Rothenburg. The old entrance into the Gothic Town Hall is one of those cases.

Photospot Number 7: Shadow play at Markus Tower

Rothenburg has a thousand surprises to those who have their eyes open. Come around a corner and sometimes, an opportunity just hits you. These subtle shadow plays always stop me in my tracks.

Photospot Number 8: Röder Gate

One of the most picturesque gates in a town full of them, the Rodertor on the East end of the medieval center has always taken my breath away.

Photospot Number 9: Double bridge in Tauber Valley

The 14th century Double Bridge over the Tauber River has always intrigued me. I like to image the millions of people who have crossed this bridge in the last 600 years. How they were dressed, where they were going, where they ended up.
