The 37-meter-high Klingentor Tower was built between 1395 and 1400 and was an important part of Rothenburg’s water supply for centuries. Since 1594, water from the Tauber Valley has been pumped into a reservoir in the tower and channeled from there to the city’s fountains. As a defensive and water tower, it impressively combines technical innovation with medieval defensive architecture. The horse trough below the Klingentor is part of the historic Klingentor bastion and is one of the few remaining water-bearing sections of Rothenburg’s city fortifications. The pond served both for defense and for the care of workhorses. Today, the site serves as a reminder of the close connection between city defense and everyday life in the Middle Ages.
