The loop trail first takes us through the deep, romantic Tauber Valley up to the opposite side of the valley.

 

From the market square, we head south through Obere and Untere Schmiedgasse to Plönlein. Continuing through the Siebersturm, we reach the so-called Kappenzipfel. We follow Spitalgasse, past the Spitalkirche Hl. Geist, to the imposing Spitalbastei (c. 1535). Our path leads us past it on the right, over the covered Wallgrabensteg bridge, and along the road leading up from the Tauber Valley, where the W12 hiking trail marker begins. Now we follow the W12 signs along the footpath beside the state highway to the Schwimmbadwäldchen (Siechhauswäldchen), where our path leads down the Tauber slope to the Obere Walkmühle.  Our trail now goes to the right around the mill onto the Taubertalweg, which takes us across the Tauber River. After the bridge, we take a sharp left and walk a short distance upstream along the Tauber, then climb steeply up to the Natursteig, which we follow to the left along the edge of the slope until we reach State Road St2419. We cross the road (be careful!) and immediately afterward turn right onto a dirt road leading up to the Eckartshof. A small road takes us down into the village of Gebsattel, where we follow the signs. We pass the St. Laurentius Church and the Schwarzen Adler Inn before crossing the Tauber River on a pedestrian bridge 200 m further on. Now we keep to the right on the Tauberweg and follow it to the end of the road. Now turn left along Weißengasse toward Schloßstraße; Gebsattel Castle is located on the opposite side of the street. Turn left again and continue along Schloßstraße until you reach the Zum Lamm Inn.

Return route: Alongthe main street, a good 400 meters further toward Rothenburg, we reach Bahnhofweg, which runs along the old railway embankment of the Rothenburg to Dombühl line, discontinued in 1971. Here we cross Hauptstraße and continue along the parallel, paved footpath down to the Igelsbach. After crossing Feuchtwanger Straße, we turn diagonally right up Sankt-Leonhard-Straße toward the church of the same name. This is where the infirmary was located, where, since the 16th century, people suffering from leprosy and syphilis were cared for far outside the city. At the church, we keep to the left and follow Sankt-Leonhard-Straße to the end. Here, we cross Dinkelsbühler Straße and follow the uphill footpath, which leads us over a bridge across the state highway to the RothenburgBad, the city’s indoor and outdoor swimming pool. If we continue along the footpath parallel to the state highway, we’ll arrive back at the Spitalbastei, through which we’ll enter the city—and eventually reach our starting point, the market square .
