The former Johanniter Commandery in Rothenburg (built in 1396) houses Germany’s most significant museum of legal history, the Medieval Crime Museum.

In addition to instruments of torture and devices used to carry out corporal punishment, capital punishment, and punishments for dishonor, the exhibition also features precious paintings, prints, engravings, seals, and legal texts. The most prominent exhibits
are the world-famous Iron Maiden and the impressive replicas of the Imperial Regalia.
Educational facilities and a cafeteria round out the offerings for visitors. 

The pictures show:
Baker’s cage: Bakers who sold bread that was too small were submerged in water or manure in the baker’s cage.
A mask of shame with a pig’s snout and so-called “fool’s herb”—used to ridicule the condemned.
Spiked chair—a cruel instrument of torture from the era of the witch trials.
